The Write to Rave

Following her success with Poet in da Corner (Royal Court), Debris Stevenson’s next project is a new immersive experience that explores the radicalism of raving and the politics of a female body dancing alone. It will investigate hybrid artistry and the seam between poetry, theatre, music and movement.

The first phase of R&D took place in winter 2019 at Dance4 and Bernie Grant Centre with performances at From the Source Festival, Warwick Arts Centre and London Jazz Festival, Southbank Centre (Serious Records Commission) with collaborative performers Amy Fitz Doyley and Dizraeli.

Following a pandemic-induced pause, we carried on developing the idea at Curve, Liberty UK Festival, Hackney Empire, ARC Stockton and Warwick Arts Centre in 2021. So much happened, we:

  • Worked with amazing artists

  • Created a draft soundtrack – listen here

  • Wrote a participatory script of the first story for the play (there will be 4-6 in the final show) for Wonder Fools’ Positive Stories for Negative Times

  • Solidified the movement vocabulary

  • Created a short film about the process – watch here

Plans are underway for further writing and development in 2022 - watch this space!

Thank you to the amazing organisations that supported this first phase of R&D: Arts Council England, Hackney Empire, Warwick Arts Centre, Curve Theatre, Serious, ARC Stockton, Wonder Fools, Bernie Grant Centre, Dance4 and the Traverse.
