Becoming-Animal

Becoming-Animal is a dance film that invites audiences to consider the human condition and the image of humans as cattle within Western society. Dance academics Emilia Robinson and Sidonie Carey-Green use movement to question the power dynamics of human relationships and the slowly decaying connections we have to animals and to nature.

The artists use Gilles Deleuze’s descriptive language in the chapter ‘Body, Meat and Spirit: Becoming-Animal’ from the book The Logic of Sensation (2003)alongside key images from Francis Bacon’s work: Head (1947), Figure in a Landscape (1960) and Self-Portrait as a Businessman (2002). These reference points offer a catalyst for choreographic enquiry into states of becoming, humanness and animalism.

Becoming-Animal was due to be shared at a Tate Late in March 2020 which was sadly cancelled due to COVID-19.

This project was supported by Dance Research Studio.
